What was done a few decades ago... without after effects. Interesting though!
Norman MacLaren is one of the pionneer of motion graphics and stop-motion, if you are interested about this field you have to watch more of his work.

You could see on this one how he expressed the sound (electronic music from the 60s!!!) though abstract shapes...

Kinetics tutorials

Kinetic Typography is a big fashion nowadays... Combining it with some of the effects you have learn during the typography and After Effects would be a good plus!

Here are some extra tutorials that could really help you improve your work.

A useful software... MPEG Streamclip

It's free, it's cool and you will never live without it again: Mpegstreamclip allows to extract from DVD, VCD, VOB files, almost any other formats you can think of and allow you to convert it to the format you want... So for instance if you plan to do your portfolio, you might want to extract your work from your previous Video DVDs (unless you were smart enough to keep your original editing...) and convert to DV format... Well our little friends Mpegstreamclip can do these kind of tasks... and it's free (Life should be more often like this)
Try it, Use it, LOVE IT!

For Mac and for Evil Windows too.
